Why me?
Let
me tell you a little about myself and why you should book
your fishing trip to Costa Rica with Americana Sportfishing.
I'm an American, raised in San Diego. I fished a great deal
around Southern California and Baja most of my early life.
Then I discovered Costa Rica…
I've lived in Costa Rica for 25 years and founded
Americana Sportfishing 20 years
ago. It’s what I do for a living. For six years I wrote
the weekly fishing column for the Tico Times, the largest
English-language newspaper in Central America. That column
kept me in touch with fishing captains, guides, hotel managers,
sportfishing lodge owners and, even more important, my clients.
That gave me a tremendous advantage over people
booking fishing trips to Costa Rica out of their U.S. or Canadian
offices, who visit here perhaps once a year at best, if ever.
I LIVE HERE. I see and talk to the fishing captains
and boat owners often. Many visit my home/office when they’re passing through San José. I take
a few days off to fish myself every once in a while - as a matter of fact I fished two days in mid-April out of Quepos (and got skunked! See the April fishing report). I look
at sportfishing from the angler’s viewpoint, so I know what you want when you go fishing.

What they say about Americana
Sportfishing:
“Sorry I took so long to get in touch with you after our fishing trip in Costa Rica. We had a great time fishing with Bobby McGuinness (out of Golfito) and we would definitely fish with him again. Our first day was really slow but Day 2 was great. My son Peter landed eight sailfish, all in the 100-120lb range, and one nice mahi-mahi which we kept and ate for Christmas dinner. Once we even had a double header going. We were very pleased with all the arrangements you made for us and will certainly use your service again. Many thanks.”

“Another great trip. Although it started rather slow we made up for it the last two days, the totals were: one 500lb black marlin; 15 sails caught and released - I cannot tell you how many we raised but it was a lot; two yellowfin tuna caught (and one 100lb yellowfin that broke off at the boat); and three dorado. And of course the Macushla out of Los Sueños Marina and Captain Johnny Cerpas and crew were just fantastic. I have been on a lot of charters but this crew is just the best. Thanks again and I will let you know in a few months when we are going next year.”

“Great trip with our four boys age 13-15. Missed a few sails early out deep then moved in some looking for tuna action. Found a big tree stump floating maybe 10 miles offshore. We trolled by once and all %@#$ broke loose. We stayed around the stump for about an hour and just wore the fish out. We boated six 10-20lb dorado, four 15-25lb wahoo, and fifteen 5-10lb tuna... Missed one sail then hooked up with a 103-inch sail and one of the 15-year-olds fought it to the boat and released it after about 20 minutes. Randy Wilson (on the Talking Fish out of Tamarindo) is a great captain with a wonderful crew.”

“I want to thank you for putting together my trip to Costa Rica. I cannot say anything but great things about Bill Gannon and his mate Dempsey. To have the opportunity to fish with a professional and personal crew was very rewarding. I know the bite (out of Quepos) was off, we saw tons of fish each day, but unfortunately we couldn’t get a consistent bite going. We did land five of the seven sails that entered our spread over the three days. I enjoyed Bill's ability to change on the fly. We encountered a yellowfin tuna purse seine offshore and managed to get on the school of fish he was targeting. We had a great bite landing eight of nine tuna (up to 35lbs) hooked. I hope to come down again next year.”

“Just wanted you to know, Jim McCormick and the group from Canada had a great time fishing on the Hoo's Your Daddy (out of Los Sueños) with Captain Dana Thomas and his crew. We landed 14 sailfish and two dorado, also raised a marlin. We also lost as many as we caught. Had a great time and am planning another in a couple of years. Thank you.”
